What is Cashmere?

What is Cashmere?

When it comes to a luxurious, soft fabric that’s comfortable, cosy and ready to wear anywhere, you can’t beat cashmere. It has been worn for centuries and never goes out of style - and there are plenty of reasons for that. Here is everything you need to know about a beautiful fabric that stands the test of time.

What is Cashmere?

Cashmere is a natural fibre that comes from the soft winter undercoat of cashmere goats, usually found in areas with extreme continental climate with long, cold winters, like Mongolia, China, Afghanistan and India. The name “cashmere” comes from the Kashmir region, known for its association with the fabric. Cashmere is warmer and lighter than sheep’s wool, without feeling itchy or irritating on the skin.

The natural fibre is then woven into wool, which is then made into fabric that is crafted into beautiful cashmere knitwear.

What is Cashmere Made From?

As we’ve already mentioned, cashmere wool comes from cashmere goats (named after the fabric). These goats have two layers of hair: the outer layer, which is coarse and provides protection from harsh weather, and the inner layer, known as the down or undercoat. This second layer is incredibly soft and insulating, and it is what cashmere wool comes from.

To get the cashmere fibres, the goats are combed or sheared during the spring moulting season when they naturally shed their winter coats. This doesn’t harm the animals and means that they can re-grow their coat. The fibres are then cleaned, sorted and spun into yarn, ready to be transformed into luxurious cashmere products.

Is Cashmere a Good Fabric?

Cashmere is considered one of the finest fabrics in the world, especially when it comes to knitwear. It is known for being incredibly soft, luxurious and warm while still being durable, breathable and versatile.

Cashmere can be woven into almost anything, and helps you to regulate your temperature, staying warm when it is cold and wicking moisture away when it is warm. Plus, it is a natural fabric that is both sustainable and biodegradable.

Why is Cashmere so Soft?

Real cashmere's softness is one of the biggest reasons why it is so popular. The fine, downy fibres of the cashmere goat’s undercoat are incredibly soft to the touch. So when they’re woven into wool they provide a level of comfort and warmth that is hard to match. This is what sets cashmere apart from other types of knitwear and materials.

What is so Good About Cashmere?

Cashmere is a sought-after luxury fabric, and for good reason. It is extremely versatile and has plenty of qualities that people love, keeping it in demand. Wondering why cashmere? This is why people choose cashmere knitwear time and again:

  • Extra soft: One of the biggest reasons that cashmere is so popular is its softness. There really is nothing else like it for soft, luxurious knitwear that feels gentle against the skin.
  • Warmth: Despite its lightweight and delicate feel, cashmere is incredibly warm. The natural insulation properties of cashmere fibres trap heat efficiently, making it ideal for winter clothing without being bulky or heavy.
  • Breathability: Cashmere is both warm and breathable. It has the ability to wick moisture away from the body, helping to regulate body temperature and prevent overheating. This makes it suitable for different seasons and climates.
  • Durability and longevity: While it might appear delicate, high-quality cashmere is surprisingly durable. With proper care, cashmere can last for years or even decades. Cashmere clothing is a true investment in your wardrobe, season after season.
