THE STONES OF VENICE

Autumn Winter 2023 Capsule 1

The mazed streets demand to be explored and whilst time on the water in Venice is inevitable, the stones underfoot are the main medium for discovery.

The city's skein of waterways dictates that there must also be bridges - 393 of them, 402 if you count those of Giudecca.

The crossings range from the grand and famous, such as the Ponte Rialto and Ponte dell'Accademia, two of the four spans over the Grand Canal to the quirky - Ponte de Pugni, the Bridge of Fists, once the site of mass brawls between rival factions - and the peculiar, like Ponte Chiodo, a unique bridge built without parapet, handrail or balustrade, which is also one of the 72 privately owned crossings in the city.

There is one simple rule to getting deliciously lost – if you see an inviting bridge, take it, and succumb to the serendipity of La Serenissima.
